One Thousand Children Need Hope Today

The COVID-19 pandemic is devastating. We all know that. And when we look at the global suffering and loss we see an almost overwhelming tale of disaster and crisis.

We wonder how we can help. It all seems too much.

But we CAN make a difference. It starts with focusing on the possible. It starts with communities. It starts with the kids.

In the small municipality of Shankharapur, about 30 miles east of Kathmandu in an isolated hilly region, families on living on the edge of total disaster. The folks who live there are not the only community at risk -- there are plenty who face similar devastation. But here is where we start. Because THIS is what is possible for now.

Shankharapur has about 28,000 inhabitants. The men and women are mostly laborers, many of who would go into Kathmandu seeking work every day. But since the pandemic struck there is no work. There is no income. And only a small number of Shankharapur's citizens have even a small plot of land to grow a few vegetables or potatoes. Many families don't even have the few rupees needed to buy masks for their families to guard against the spread of the COVID pandemic.

Working with the mayor, the local health and education officials, and with our partners at HomeNet Nepal, we have identified the most vulnerable children in Shankharapur. And although we can't tackle a global pandemic we can make a make a difference for 1000 young children who are at risk of malnutrition. We can ensure that 1000 kids will have warm clothing for the winter months that lie ahead. And we can act today so that 1000 more kids will not be lost to education, will not be forced into child labor or into early marriages.
